The Webster Library entrance will be redesigned to better suit your needs. In order to create an optimal space, we would love for you to share your ideas about the library entrance area (along the atrium on LB2)! A series of plans have been drawn up as options for our new entrance. If you are interested in participating in the library redesign, we would love to hear your thoughts on our new plans and the future “look” of your library. One-hour focus group meetings will be taking place in March at Webster Library room LB-340 to assess the new plans. If you are available we would love for you to join us. The dates are as follows:

The Freda Otchere Staff Recognition Award is established "to encourage and reward staff currently working for Concordia Libraries whose commitment and professionalism reflect the values exemplified by Freda Otchere".

This award is made possible through the generous gift of Dr. Dan Otchere, Associate Professor of Economics at Concordia University, who created the Freda Otchere Endowment Fund in 2010 in honour of his wife. From 1970 to 2004, Freda Otchere served the Concordia University Libraries as cataloguer and Head of Database Maintenance. Her exemplary service to the Concordia community is warmly remembered, and provides the model by which nominees are identified.

The award is made to any current employee (full-time or part-time, permanent or temporary) who, in the course of the previous year, performed an outstanding service that bears witness to individual honesty, courage, perseverance and integrity. The first recipient will be announced in January 2012. Nominations are now being sought.

Concordia University Libraries became the first Montreal library system to open 24/7. This weekend, the Libraries set a new record, albeit accidentally. Early morning on Sunday November 6^th, all clocks will be set back from 2 AM to 1 AM as the region moves from Eastern Daylight to Eastern Standard Time. So while many of us are enjoying an extra long sleep, those intrepid students who frequent the Webster or Vanier Library in the overnight hours can enjoy a whole extra hour of study time. That’s right, the Libraries will be open 25 hours in one day! Admittedly not much of a record, but it should be a good reminder for everyone to reset your clocks and watches back one hour on the morning of Sunday November 6th.

Concordia University students, faculty and staff are now able to borrow a tablet computer for a period of three days from the Circulation Desk at the Vanier Library and at the Webster Library. A total of 25 Apple iPad 2 tablet computers with 16GB and Wi-Fi are available for loan. The tablet computers are available on a first come, first served basis. Requests (bookings) and renewals are not permitted.

Several apps have been selected by librarians and are installed on the tablet computers. Additional apps can be downloaded on the tablet computers with a personal iTunes account as the tablet computers will be lent unlocked. Click here for a list of suggested apps.

After Party presents three installations that stem from artist book projects by Kerri Flannigan, Sarah Nesbitt and Jenny Lin. Set within wooden display cases viewed from above, each installation forms a microcosmic examination of fragments, scrutinized and reassembled into narratives that are personal, collective and cumulatively revealing.

Share your thoughts about the library entrance area (along the atrium on LB2). Suggestions may be about functions (picking up books, new book display, information desk, study space, furniture), aesthetics (signage or display panels, artwork, plants, etc.) and any other idea you would like to share with us.

The Urban Clay Projects expand on the integral relationship between clay in the city.  Clay is involved in all aspects of living in the city.  Ranging between the scale of architecture and the intimacy of personal space, it is both functional and decorative.  We examined the way clay currently exists in the city, indoors and out, above ground and under, and considered its relationship to the built environment.  With this in mind, students were asked to create a reponse to a specific site in the city on the Concordia campus in clay. These works reflect an individual artistic interest and consider how the works function in public space.  With sensitivity to both the material and the site, they strive for new and meaningful ways to enhance the built environment of Montreal.

The library system has just been upgraded to the latest software release. While the functionality has not changed, there are some changes you will notice in CLUES right away.

What's new?

CLUES has an updated look and feel with new icons.

New searches by Database Name and Database Subject are now possible from the dropdown menu and the search options.

Click on an item's location to see where the shelves are located on Webster or Vanier library floor plans.

What's changed?

There is a single search box on the homepage. Other additional search options stay easily accessible from "Search options (with tips)" with a single click.

Search by journal title has been simplified.

When you mark and save items for export, they are saved to a bag. You can view, manage, and export saved records in the bag.

A single asterisk  * can be used for all types of truncation.

What's ahead?

In the coming weeks, we will be fine-tuning the interface and introducing some new features.  An optional Reading History will remember the titles that you have borrowed from the library.

There will also be a feature which will allow you to create, save, and manage lists of titles in your MyCLUES account.

Madeleine Pippa Bartlett's work addresses issues of propaganda-like visual imagery and branding within the educational institution. Subverting the university's graphics standards guidelines and echoing Soviet propaganda posters, she has produced a series of silkscreened posters and wearables with a new visual identity.

Khadija stands in silence and waits for the public to listen to spoken text embedded in her braided hair. As listeners engage in narrative exchange, they are necessarily in contact with her and therefore with her story. This exhibition highlights the role that gothic literature plays in Latour's artistic production and demonstrates how his early artist's books directly led to an ongoing series of page art. On March 21^st 2011, a new Course Reserve Room will open in Webster Library (LB-201). The Course Reserve Room will house most undergraduate textbooks and course packs, as well as all books put on reserve by professors and librarians, including personal copies belonging to faculty. Materials, shelved by course code, will be accessible from open shelving for consultation and may also be borrowed - with staff assistance at the service desk or using a self checkout machine. There will be two photocopiers in the room and it will be open during regular circulation services hours. At Vanier Library, reserve material continues to be kept at the Circulation Desk.

Faculty wishing to place a book on reserve may continue to use the Reserve Request form, available at http://library.concordia.ca/services/reserves/. Personal copies will be placed on reserve only if the book is neither in the collection nor available for purchase. If the required book is in the Concordia collection, personal copies will be immediately returned. If the book is to be purchased, personal copies will be returned once the library has acquired a copy.

• A booking slip, indicating the booking time, and room marker, identifying the room booked, will be proof of booking.
• A minimum of two Concordia University students or faculty in good standing is required to book a room; any one person in the group may book the room in advance. A valid ID card from each person must be presented at the Circulation Desk in exchange for a booking slip and a room marker. The latter will be issued only to the person who originally booked the room.
• The room marker must be returned to the Circulation Desk at the end of the booking period or dropped in the Key Deposit Slot after Circulation Desk service hours.
• To book a room, click on “Book a study room” in CLUES (the library’s catalogue).
• Maximum number of rooms booked at any Concordia University library at any time, is two.
• Rooms may be booked for up to three consecutive hours; no bookings can be made 10 minutes before or after an existing booking to allow for the exchange of room markers.

Webster Library is undergoing renovations this summer. We have anticipated some questions library users may have about the project and the answers appear on this page. Should you have more questions or comments, please contact a library staff member.

When will the renovations take place?

The project begun June 15 and is scheduled to end August 18.

Will this project have an impact on library services?

During almost all phases of the project, you will continue to have access to the entire collection and library services. At certain times, some services will be affected. Consult the Webster Library Renovation Project Information Table below to plan your activities.

You can also consult the posting at the entrance of the library which indicates any minor disruptions for that day. Other signs in the library will direct you to alternate access or services.

What is the nature of the project?

A new carpet will be installed on all three floors and rooms LB-201 and LB-369 will be refurbished. Most of the carpet in Webster library was installed in 1992 for the opening of the McConnell Building. This project will enhance the atmosphere of your library and contribute to a better experience while you are studying at Webster.

The installation of the new carpet consists in the following steps:

1. Vacuum the old carpet.
2. Cut the old carpet in 1 meter square sections.
3. Removal of the old carpet.
4. Preparation of the surface with a sealing product.
5. Lay a thin layer of cement.
6. Installation of the new carpet.

Are there any health or safety concerns?

The renovation project will be done in multiple phases. For each phase, the work perimeter is surrounded by plastic. For your safety, please do not enter these areas.

Products used contain no volatile organic compound (VOC), have little or no odor and have no negative effect on health.

Is this project environmentally friendly?

The new Webster library carpet consists of an average total of 44 to 55% of recycled content. It also resists ozone degradation, and contains an antimicrobial preservative, permanently incorporated into the backing, protecting from a broad spectrum of mold, mildew, bacteria and odor-causing microorganisms.

We chose a "modular carpet". This means that instead of big rolls, the carpet is coming in 50 cm squares. This system typically produces 67% less waste than conventional broadloom. In addition, the old carpet and new carpet packaging will be recycled.

How much noise can I expect during the renovations?

Certain steps in the process of the carpet replacement may create noise in the library. Since the working areas are delimited for each day, you should be able to find a seat in a study zone that meets your needs. We apologize for the inconvenience.

“Concordians have, once again, found a way to share their innovative findings and creativity with communities the world over”, says Judith Woodsworth, President and Vice-Chancellor of Concordia. “As befits its role as host of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences next month, our university is now leading the way on this year’s Congress theme: Connected Understanding/le savoir branché.”

Gerald Beasley, Concordia’s University Librarian, was instrumental in the campus-wide dialogue on open access that began more than a year ago. “I am delighted that Senate voted to support the recommendations of all four Faculty Councils and the Council of the School of Graduate Studies. There are only a handful of precedents in North America for the kind of leadership that Concordia faculty have demonstrated by their determination to make publicly-funded research available to all rather than just the minority able to afford the rapidly rising subscription costs of scholarly databases, books and journals.”

This past year, Concordia launched Spectrum, an open access digital repository that continues to grow beyond its initial 6,000 dissertations submitted at Concordia, and at its predecessors Sir George Williams University and Loyola College. The Senate Resolution encourages all of Concordia’s researchers to deposit their research and creative work in Spectrum.

Members of Concordia's Book Arts Club present their recent works currently on display in the Webster Library (2nd floor, south atrium) and host a public conversation about the role of the book in today's culture. What does it mean to be making books today? Is there a place for newspapers and mass market books in our future? Can the book die? Come and discuss the future, past, and present of the book.

Refreshments will be served.

Between January 21 and February 19, randomly selected participants were asked by e-mail to respond to a series of questions about Concordia Libraries' spaces, collections and services. The questions are standardized to allow comparisons over time and across different libraries. A report on the results of the 2010 survey has already been produced by the LibQUAL+ team and you are invited to consult it here.

This kind of feedback is a very rich source of inspiration and guidance for us. It will take a few weeks for us to analyze the data found in the report, along with the free text comments that many participants chose to add. We will also be comparing the results to similar surveys conducted in 2006 and 2007. At the end of our analysis we will publish a brief summary. The summary will identify some of the more important issues and trends, and what actions we plan to address them. In the meantime, thank you again to all who took part in this important survey.

The ASFASA Festival is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims at creating links between students from the Fine Arts and Arts & Science faculties while encouraging communication and the cross-pollination of ideas between departments of Concordia University.

Concordia Libraries have recently made a few changes to borrowing privileges for students, faculty and staff. The changes are a result of comments we received from you and reflect the needs of different categories of users. The summary of changes for each user group is below.

Concordia undergraduate students & support staff as well as faculty & graduate students of other Canadian universities

• Maximum number of items on hold has been increased from 5 to 10 items.
• Loan period for books and media items such as audio recordings and CD/DVD-ROMs has been changed from two weeks (14 days) to three weeks (21 days) unless requested by another user.
• If another user requests an item checked out by a student or staff, the person who has the item will receive an email informing them that someone else has requested the item, and of the new due date. They will always be guaranteed 14 days with the item, and will have at least 4 days to return it.
• Users who do not return recalled items by the due date will not be able to renew, request or borrow any item.
• Because the loan period was increased, the number of renewals allowed was changed from 5 to 3. The total number of days a student can potentially keep a borrowed item did not change.

Concordia graduate students

• Maximum number of items that can be borrowed at any one time has been increased from 30 to 60.
• Maximum number of items on hold has been increased from 5 to 10 items.
• Loan period for audio recordings, has been increased from two to three weeks.

Concordia faculty and administrative staff

• Maximum number of items that can be borrowed at any one time has been increased from 30 to 100.
• Maximum number of items on hold has been increased from 5 to 10 items.
• Loan period for audio recordings, has been increased from two to three weeks.

Following Open Access Week (Oct. 19-23), Concordia University Libraries demonstrate their commitment to supporting innovations that provide wider dissemination and facilitate easier research access to scholarly publishing, by becoming an institutional member of the Public Library of Science (PLoS).

PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. PLoS publishes peer-reviewed, open access scientific and medical journals that include original research as well as timely feature articles.

All material published by the Public Library of Science, whether submitted to or created by PLoS, is published under an open access license that allows unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

With Concordia University now being a member of PLoS, Concordia authors obtain a 10% discount on any publication fee for all their journals. Concordia Libraries are happy to announce that we were recently selected as a recipient of the Nippon Foundation's 100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan international grant program. According to the Foundation, the project aims to provide a "clearer and more comprehensive understanding of contemporary Japan that transcends stereotypes and out-dated ideas." Subject areas covered by the books include culture, politics, history, literature, cinema, art, economics and business.

The Libraries already owned half of the 100 books; acquiring the remaining titles has enabled us to better support the growing interest in Japan studies at the university. All 100 titles are catalogued in CLUES and available for borrowing. For more information contact: Susie.Breier@concordia.ca

Spectrum currently contains the full text of over 6000 theses and dissertations produced at the university from 1967 to 2003. It also offers Concordia faculty and researchers an additional venue for sharing their research using a simple process of self-submission. The name Spectrum reflects the variety of original research and creative activity that characterizes the scholarly output of Concordia University. The database, in development since 2007, is an initiative of the Concordia University Libraries supported by the Office of the Vice-President, Research & Graduate Studies.

"I am delighted to see the launch of this significant new resource," said Louise Dandurand, Vice-President, Research and Graduate Studies. "The creation of a Research Repository speaks to Concordia's commitment to increase its contribution to world knowledge and promote public access to the results of publicly funded research."

"Research deposited in Spectrum is highly visible, because the site will be searchable using popular search engines such as Google and Google Scholar," added Jocelyn Godolphin, Associate University Librarian for Collection Services. "Concordia University now joins some 1200 other repositories round the world in providing a university-wide open access repository which will increase accessibility and preserve the scholarship produced by Concordia University researchers."

We have received a new estimated time of completion from the contractors. All work around Webster Library's third floor Media Services desk should be completed by February 27th. Work on the second floor, where office spaces have been reconfigured to house more staff, will be completed one week later. Library staff thank all Webster Library users for their continued patience.

Update for week beginning January 12, 2009.

The contractor will be back on site on Monday January 12th to continue with the preparation of the space. A temporary wall around the 3rd Floor counter will begin on January 19th. The construction of the walls for the 2nd Floor offices and the 3rd Floor counter will begin January 26th. Most work will happen between January 26th and February 20th.

Update for Week Beginning December 8th.

This week, the 3rd floor Media Services Desk will be moved forward a few feet prior to a reorganization of the staff spaces behind it, and in preparation for the subsequent relocation of Webster Library’s Interlibrary Loans operation.

Also, all electrical work is expected to be completed in preparation for the relocation of the 3rd floor’s graphic work stations and carrels. When the new configuration is complete, these work stations will be in the 3rd floor’s atrium area, i.e. directly in front of the desk.

Construction in the Webster Library

Contractors and electricians will be working on the 2nd and 3rd floors of Webster Library for several weeks as of November 24th. They will be on site Monday-Friday 8 hours/day starting at 5:00 a.m. Much of the work will take place away from public areas. All noisy work (e.g. drilling) should be completed by 8:00 a.m. each morning, after which we anticipate only minimal disturbance for library users. Access to our services and collections should not be restricted at any time during this busy period.

We sincerely apologize to all our Webster Library users and staff for any inconvenience they may experience.

When completed, this work will provide some 120 square metres of additional study space for students, while also allowing some important adjustments to library operations. Our Government Information Services unit has already been relocated in preparation. The most visible change over the next few weeks will be the relocation of Interlibrary Loans to the 3rd-floor Media Services area.

We intend to provide regular updates and a more detailed timetable for the work as and when these become available. In the meantime, desk staff will be pleased to answer or refer your immediate questions. Please direct more general comments and suggestions to our e-mail feedback service.

As part of Live-in for Literacy 2009, a DREAM (Discover the Reality of Educating All Minds) project, two Concordia students are pitching tents in the Webster Library where they will be living from January 16th until January 26th. This is the first year that Concordia University participates in this event. Six other Universities across Canada will also be participating.

DREAM aims to raise $40,000 in donations coast to coast to construct nine school libraries in India through the internationally renowned charity Room to Read.

"India’s children desperately need our help. The seeds for Room to Read were planted when I visited a library in Nepal for 450 children that contained no books" said John Wood, CEO and Founder of Room to Read. "What these students in Canada are doing is going to have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of children and I support their energy, enthusiasm and 'Go Big' spirit!"

The students must remain in the library 24 hours a day, with only five minutes of every hour permitted for bathroom or other necessary breaks. "It's not easy missing classes and living in a roped-off area for 10 days” said John MacDonald, DREAM Co-Chair and a past camper of the event, “but it's a lot easier than the lives of the children we're helping. They don’t have a library to read in, let alone live in – so with the help of Room to Read and all of Canada, we’re building them nine."

In the past four years the event raised $50,000 to help build a computer lab in Cambodia and nine school libraries in Nepal. This year’s event will be broadcast live via webcam 24 hours a day at the Live-In for Literacy website.

Concordia University has signed a public performance license agreement with Criterion which allows films covered by the agreement to be shown at the University for educational purposes. Films covered by the agreement may be shown at the University whether they are obtained from the Library, video/DVD store, or your own personal collection.

The license agreement includes all films produced by studios listed in Appendix A of the license agreement. To determine if a film you wish to show is included in the agreement, check if the producer/studio is represented in the list.

In addition Criterion maintains a list of film titles which may be searched to determine the producer/studio of a film. Please note that the list of film titles does not include all films covered in the agreement.

The objective with this pilot project is to identify technical and service issues that may arise.

The pilot is limited to the printers on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Webster Library. As of December 10, print jobs sent from Library workstations at Webster will be printed double-sided by default.

All Vanier workstations, the Libraries laptops as well as our patrons personal laptops will not be part of the pilot and will continue to print single sided jobs for the present.

If you wish to print single-sided to a Webster Library black and white printer, you will have to change the print setting to Single-sided.

While double-sided printing will be saving paper, other costs associated with printing (e.g. toner and equipment) will remain the same or slightly increase as printers may require more maintenance. However, once double-sided printing is fully implemented in the Library and we can account for any savings, we will look at the possibility of price reduction. It is not our intention to make money as a result of this initiative.

Full implementation of double-sided printing on all library printers will depend on success of the pilot. If all goes well, our target date for converting all Library printers is early January. However, Library laptops may not be properly configured to print double-sided until late January. We are also exploring options for double-sided printing from personal laptops owned by Library users.

Euromonitor's Global Market Information Database (GMID) has been discontinued, and Concordia University Libraries have migrated to Passport GMID from Euromonitor.

Passport GMID is an international market research and analysis database that provides detailed reports and statistics on countries, companies, markets, economies and consumers.  Country statistics contain demographic, economic and marketing statistics.  Market reports contain international market performance, important developments in the product sector and competition strategy.  Company reports offer strategic profiles of the leading multinationals in the industry.  Consumer lifestyle examines indicators, choices and factors to compare market conditions around the world.

Sustainalytics focuses on environmental, social and governance research and analysis. The database evaluates and analyzes companies on their ESG performance using targeted sector-specific ESG indicators. The Canadian Directory to Foundations and Corporations contains updated information on Canadian Foundations that provide grant funding for projects and organizations. In addition to basic contact information, the names of grant recipients and the amounts of grant funding are generally available.

C19: The Nineteenth Century Index is a bibliographic index for 19th-century research, providing records for millions of documents ranging from books and newspapers to government documents and periodicals. It includes all the records listed in Poole's Index to Periodical Literature as well as the Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals (1824-1900) and the American Periodicals Series (1791-1919). It also provides access to Palmer's Index to the Times (1790-1905), the full text of which is available on Times Digital Archive. It includes links to the full-text articles in Periodicals Archive Online, JSTOR and House of Commons Parliamentary Papers.

ICPSR is a statistical data repository covering fields such as sociology, political science, economics, demography, education, child care, health care, crime, minority populations, aging, terrorism, substance abuse, mental health, public policy, and international relations. The collection focuses on U.S. issues but also includes several datasets that deal with international and Canadian topics. The data is presented in a raw format which means that statistical analysis software such as SPSS or SAS is needed to interpret it.

Please note: users must create a MyData account on the ICPSR site in order to access data. The account must be created on a computer connected to Concordia’s network, or remotely through Concordia’s VPN service.

British Humanities Index, an international abstracting and indexing tool for research in the humanities, indexes over 400 internationally respected humanities journals and weekly magazines published in the UK and other English speaking countries, as well as quality newspapers published in the UK.

Ethnographic Video Online includes classic works from the pioneers of ethnographic film, including Robert Flaherty, Timothy Asch, John Marshall, Robert Gardner, Jean Rouch, and many more—together with contemporary works by innovative filmmakers from around the world. Concordia University Libraries have subscribed to the Journals Archive of Oxford University Press, giving access to full-text content from 1849-1995 in 157 journals.

Hill Times is a weekly newspaper that covers Canadian federal politics. Ottawa, February 8, 2007 – The Canada Foundation for Innovation today announced a $19.1 million investment to support the development of a new infrastructure for social sciences and humanities research. The funds were awarded to the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) — a consortium of Canadian universities that provides its members with desktop access to a wide range of research content through licensing and purchase agreements with Canadian and international publishers. The University of Ottawa will be the host institution for this new national infrastructure.

The acquisition of digital content from international sources will enable over 800,000 researchers and graduate students to draw upon a wealth of digital journals, databases and other scholarly content from social sciences and humanities disciplines. With 67 participating universities across the country, this initiative will significantly enhance the capacity of Canadian researchers to advance knowledge and remain at the forefront in rapidly changing areas of research.

“The new digital content infrastructure will profoundly change the way Canadians conduct research in the fields of social sciences and humanities, said Dr. Ronald Bond, Provost Emeritus, University of Calgary, and Chair of the CRKN Advisory Board. The expanded access to global knowledge will create new opportunities for Canadian researchers and serve as a catalyst for the development of interactive and networked approaches for learning and discovery.” Over 50% of academic researchers and students in Canada are engaged in the social sciences and humanities. Research in areas such as aboriginal studies, communications, multiculturalism, economics, sustainable development, law, business, and education has an enormous impact on all aspects of Canadian society.

At present, only the largest institutions in the world are able to supply their researchers with a comprehensive array of international content resources in the social sciences and humanities, and the rate of digital publication is increasing beyond the capacity of even the best-equipped universities. “It is absolutely essential for Canada to engage in this sort of initiative to be at the forefront of social sciences and humanities research, said Dr. Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and E-commerce Law at the University of Ottawa. The new digital infrastructure will not only promote collaboration between Canadian and international researchers, but it will also help create the type of online communities needed to address complex, interdisciplinary issues facing modern society.”

The initiative is an expansion of an already successful CRKN program that provides Canadian researchers with access to international content in the natural and health sciences.

The Canadian Research Knowledge Network is a partnership of Canadian universities, dedicated to expanding digital content for the academic research enterprise in Canada. Through the coordinated leadership of librarians, researchers and administrators, CRKN undertakes large-scale content acquisition and licensing initiatives in order to build knowledge infrastructure and research capacity in Canada’s universities.

CRKN began in 1999 as the Canadian National Site Licensing Project (CNSLP), a 3‐year demonstration project made possible through a $20 million award from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and a $30 million contribution from 64 Canadian universities, 9 provincial governments and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

In April 2004, following five years of successful national operations in licensing digital content in science, engineering, health and environmental disciplines, CNSLP was incorporated as a not‐forprofit organization and renamed the Canadian Research Knowledge Network. The CRKN now delivers over 2,200 electronic journals and research databases to Canadian researchers, and manages contracts valued at over $50 million annually.

CRKN currently holds agreements with the following scholarly publishers. The Social Sciences and Humanities Digital Content Infrastructure Initiative will enable CRKN to expand its partnerships with additional publishers and content providers to deliver international, high‐value content in social sciences and humanities disciplines to Canadian researchers and students.
