Internet Sources

The Internet provides up to the minute information about current events. Numerous electronic editions of newspapers and magazines and other news services are available. Consult these links to pages of News and Media in Canadian, American and International news sources.

Newspapers

Current issues of newspapers are kept at the Media Services Desks at the Webster Library and at the Circulation Desk at the Vanier Library; backfiles are kept on microfilm. Coverage varies from source to source. Search CLUES, Concordia's online catalogue, under the title of the newspaper and check the holdings to find out which years and months of a particular newspaper are at each library.

To find newspaper articles on a particular subject use a newspaper database or index; a selection of these is listed below. Check the list of Databases or Research by Subject for additional databases and indexes, or ask at the Reference Desk.

Eureka
Provides fulltext articles from Canadian French language newspapers: La Presse, Le Devoir, Le Soleil, Le Droit. Updated daily.

Canadian Newsstand on Proquest
Provides full-text articles from Canadian newspapers (mostly Canwest),including the The Gazette (Montreal) from 1985 onwards. Archives vary with the title. Updated daily, with seven day embargo.

CBCA Reference & Current Events
Indexes several Canadian English language newspapers including the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, and the Winnipeg Free Press. Updated monthly. Does NOT provide fulltext for newspapers.

CPI.Q
Includes the full-text of the Globe and Mail from 1997 onwards,excluding the Report on Business section, sports, letters to the editor, newswires and paid sections (obituaries, announcements). Updated quarterly.

Globe & Mail on CD-ROM
Fulltext of Globe & Mail and the Winnipeg Free Press from 1998 onward. Updated twice a year.

Globe & Mail: Canada's Heritage
Full image database of the Globe & Mail from 1840 to 1999.

Lexis-Nexis
Includes full-text access to numerous newspapers including the New York Times, the Times (London), and the Toronto Star. Lexis-Nexis is available ONLY IN LIBRARY for exclusive educational use of currently enrolled Concordia University students and faculty. It is updated daily.

News Magazines and Other Sources of Background Information

A magazine article may provide more in-depth coverage of a news item or current event. Current issues of popular magazines are kept behind the Media Services Desk at the Webster and at the Circulation Desk at the Vanier Library. Some of the news magazines available in the collection include L'Actualite, The Economist, National Post Business, Maclean's, Newsweek, Time (Canadian edition).

In addition, the Current Issue Reviews and Background Papers, published by Canada's Library of Parliament provide extensive summaries of current issues. Some issues are also available at the Vanier Reference Desk and Webster Government Publications Information Desk; call 848-2424, ext. 7766 (Van) or 848-2424 ext.7711 (Web) for more information.
