refworks - export/import instructions Follow the instructions below to export references from databases to RefWorks.
If you have questions about the instructions below, ask a librarian.
Instructions for Direct Export
- Perform a search
- Click on the "Add to folder" link to save the results you want to export
- Click on the "Folder" icon at the top of the page
- Select all references and click on the "Export" icon (last one)
- Select "Direct Export to RefWorks" (located on the right)
- Click the "Save" button
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- From the results list, click on a relevant title
- Click on "BibTex" in the "Display Formats" area
- Copy the text that opens up in a new window
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "ACM Digital Library" as the Database
- Paste the text in the "Import Data from the following Text" box
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
If you have multiple records to import, copy and paste the results into a document and save the file as a .txt file
Instructions for Direct Export
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Export" link at the top of the results list
- Make sure RefWorks is selected from the drop down menu
- Click on “Continue”
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- From the "Article Options" drop-down menu, select "Download Citation(s) in... RefWorks"
- Click on "Go"
- Access the browser's "Save As" function through the "File" menu
- Select "Text" as the file type
- Save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "RefWorks Tagged Format" as the Data Source
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

- Browse to your saved file
- Click on "Import"

- Perform a search in the ASCE Civil Engineering Database
- If the full text of the article is in the ASCE Research Library, you can save the citation to RefWorks
- Click on the "Download Full Text" link
- From the "Full Text Options" menu, choose "Download Citation"
- Select the download citation from the drop-down menu as "RefWorks"
- Click on the "Go" button
- Access the browser's "Save As" function through the "File" menu
- Select "Text" as the file type
- Save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "ASCE Research Library" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

- In the "Bookbag Holdings" window, click on "Download Contents" (your browser may ask you to allow downloading)
- Save the .txt file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "Bibliography of Asian Studies" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

Instructions for Manual Export (multiple citations at a time)
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Save Marked" button
- Click on the "Export" button
- Under "Format Of List", select the "End-Note/RefWorks" option
- Under "Send List To", select the "Local Disk" option
- Click on "Submit" and save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "CLUES - Concordia University Library Catalogue" as the Database
- Select "UTF-8" for the Encoding
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

Please note - Importing results from Google Scholar only works from off-campus if you connect through the Concordia VPN.
- From the main Google Scholar search screen, click on the "options" wheel in the top right corner and select Scholar Preferences
- Next to Bibliography Manager, click on the button next to the "Show links to import citations into" option
- Select "RefWorks" from the drop-down menu
- Click on "Save Preferences"
- Perform a search
- From the results screen, click on the "Import into RefWorks" link found below each result
- Log in to RefWorks
- Your reference should be automatically imported to the "Edit Reference" option in RefWorks
- Verify the accuracy of the information and make modifications, if any
- Click on the "Save Reference" button
When using Google Scholar, information sent to RefWorks is often incomplete. Be sure to verify the accuracy and completeness of the information provided.

- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"

- Perform a search
- Check the items you want to export
- Click on "Add to my citations" under "My Marked Citations"
- Select the "Email/Download/Save/Print" option"
- Click on "Go"
- Under "Format", select "Citation + Abstract"
- Select the appropriate file format i.e. PC, Mac, or Linux as appropriate
- Click on "Download to Citation Manager"
- On the right-hand side, under "Citation Manager Formats", click on "Refworks"
- Log in to RefWorks
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Export Citations" button
- Select "Citations and Abstracts" as the Content Format
- Select "RefWorks Direct Export" as the Export Format
- Click on the "Export" button
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks

Please note, while directly exporting from ScienceDirect you may encounter a security warning. Please follow the instructions below:
- Firefox 2.0 and below:
Gives an explanatory certificate mismatch warning message which the user can click through.- Firefox 3.0:
Gives a message that has the title "Secure Connection Failed", and a link "Or you can add an exception..." at the bottom. The problem is fixed when you click on this link, and then follow the steps: Add Exception... | Get Certificate | Confirm Security Exception.- Internet Explorer 6.0 and below:
Gives an explanatory certificate mismatch warning message which the user can click through.- Internet Explorer 7.0:
Gives a message that has the title "There is a problem with this website's security certificate". You can go through by clicking on the link "Continue to this website (not recommended)".
Alternatively, if you are connecting from off campus, using a VPN connection will bypass the security certificate problem.
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on "Export" (at the top right of the search screen)
- Select "Tagged Format (*.txt)"
- Export the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "SciFinder Scholar" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on "Export checked results" at the top of the list
- Choose to export the "Citation" or the "Citation, abstracts and keywords"
- Choose "RIS format" as the file format
- Click on "Export"
- Save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "Scirus" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
Instructions for Direct Export
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Get Marked" link at the top of the results list
- Click on the "Export" link
- From "Download Record(s) into:" select "RefWorks' Direct Export Tool"
- Click on the "Export" button
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"

- Make sure RefWorks is selected from the drop down menu
- Click on “Continue”

- Select "BibText" as the Import Filter/Data Source
- Select "Multiple Databases" as the Database
- Browse to your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
Instructions for Direct Export
- Perform a search
- Click on the "Add to folder" link to save the results you want to export
- Click on the "Folder" icon at the top of the page
- Select all references and click on the "Export" icon (last one)
- Select "Direct Export to RefWorks" (located on the right)
- Click the "Save" button
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Click on the "Add to Marked Items" link to save the results you want to import
- Under "My Menu" on the left hand side of the screen, click on "Marked Items"
- Click on the paper icon (
) at the top of the Marked Items list
- In the "Export the citations from your current list of items", click on "RIS"
- Save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "Concordia University, Montreal" as the Data Source
- Select "Kluwer/SpringerLink" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on "Save"
- Select "RIS" in the "Format Options" menu
- Click on the "Download File" button
- Save the file to your computer
- Log in to RefWorks
- Select "References" and then "Import"
- Select "RIS Format" as the Import Filter/Data Source
- Select "RIS Format" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
Instructions for Direct Export
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Save to RefWorks" button
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on "Export Citation"
- Select "BibTeX" as the Format
- Select "Citation & Abstract" as the Export Type
- Click on the "Submit" button
- Save the file to your computer (or, it may download automatically to your "Download" folder)
- Click on the "X" to close the window
- Log in to RefWorks
- Hover over "References" and then select "Import"
- Scroll down and then select "BibTex" as the Import Filter/Data Source
- Select "Multiple Databases" as the Database
- Browse to find your saved file (it will typically be called "citations.bib")
- Select "UTF-8" as the Encoding.
- Click on "Import"
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
Instructions for Direct Export using the OCLC FirstSearch interface
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Click on the "Export" button
- Select "RefWorks" in the "Export to:" section
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
Instructions for Direct Export using the WorldCat Web interface (please note - importing results from WorldCat only works from off-campus if you connect through the Concordia VPN.
- Perform a search
- Select the results you want to export
- Select “Things to check out” from the “Save to” drop-down menu. (note – you must have a free account to save and export)
- Consult "your list" of saved items
- Select the items that you want to export
- Choose the "Citations View" tab
- Select "to RefWorks" in the drop-down menu next to "Export selected references:"
- The references are automatically exported to RefWorks
- Your references should appear in the "Last Imported Folder"
