Literatures in English Research Guide: How to Find Poetry

Introduction

Poetry is published in books, anthologies, selected or collected works, journals, magazines, subscription databases, and websites.

Literature Online (LION)

LION contains about 350,000 literary works:
  • English poetry from 600.
  • American poetry from 1607.
  • Canadian poetry from 1610.
  • Irish poetry from 1582.
  • Scottish poetry from 1376.
  • Welsh poetry from 1544.
  • South Asian poetry from 1828.
  • Australian and New Zealand poetry from 1823.
  • Caribbean and West Indian Poetry 1832.
  • Also features Poets on Screen, which consists of poets reading from their own works or other poets' work.

Early English Books Online (EEBO)

EEBO is a full-text and full-image database of books printed in the British Isles, British America, and other countries from 1475 to 1700. It includes:
  • Thomason Tracts: collection of 22,000 broadsides ranging from political speeches to religious tracts to newspaper articles from the period 1640-1661.
  • Tract Supplement: broadsides, pamphlets and scrapbooks primarily from the British Library.
Fulltext is not searchable in Concordia Libraries' version. Database is not complete: digitization to continue for 5-10 years.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO)

ECCO is a full-text and full-image database of about 150,000 English-language and foreign-language titles printed in Great Britain during the 18th century, along with thousands of important works from the Americas. Available at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec website, listed under Online resources: Journals, magazines, newspapers and databases.
  • Subscription for remote services required.
  • Free to all Quebec residents.

Dictionary of Old English, Old English Corpus

Produced with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the National Endowment for the Humanites, and published by the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, the Dictionary of Old English, Old English Corpus is a complete record of surviving Old English, with a dictionary and more than 3000 texts.

Middle English Compendium

The Middle English Compendium includes three major Middle English electronic resources: an electronic version of the Middle English Dictionary (MED), a HyperBibliography of Middle English prose and verse, based on the MED bibliographies, and a Corpus of Middle English Prose and Verse.

Women Writers Online (WWO)

Women Writers Online consists of electronic texts of works in English, or in English translation, from Brown University's Women Writers Project, covering the period from 1400 to 1850. Includes access to Renaissance Women Online. The texts can be browsed or searched by keywords.

Early Canadiana Online (ECO)

Early Canadiana Online is a digital library providing access to almost 14,000 digitized volumes comprising over 2 million pages of Canada's printed heritage. It features works published from the time of the first European settlers up to the early 20th Century, with particular emphasis on literature, women's history, Native studies, and the history of French Canada.

ProQuest Combined Canadian

ProQuest Combined Canadian provides fulltext of Canadian major daily newspapers. It also indexes Canadian magazines, academic journals and literary publications with fulltext articles from more than 100 titles..
  • Also includes selected fulltext and indexing of poetry.
  • To find poetry, click on More Search Options. In the Document Type section, change the drop down menu to Poem.
  • Then add more to the search, such as author, title, publication title (journal or magazine), or keyword.

Canadian Periodical Index (CPI.Q)

CPI.Q provides coverage of all subject areas with an emphasis on Canadian and international issues. It provides citations to more than 400 English and French language journals and magazines, including approximately 30 American titles.
  • Fulltext of articles from approximately 160 of the titles.
  • Also includes selected fulltext and indexing of poetry.
  • To find poetry, change the drop down menu to Document title and type poem in the search box.
  • Then add more to the search, such as author, title, publication title (journal or magazine), or keyword.

Humanities Abstracts

Humanities Abstracts provides citations to literary works published in periodicals.
  • To find poetry, type poem in the search box and change the drop down menu to Document Type.
  • Then add more to the search, such as author, title, journal name, or keyword.

MLA Directory of Periodicals

The MLA Directory of Periodicals "contains all information available on the journals and book series on the bibliography's Master List of Periodicals. Over 7,100 titles are included. The entries list editorial addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, e-mail addresses, frequency of publication, descriptions of the periodicals' scopes, circulation figures, subscription prices and addresses, advertising information, and submission guidelines. The directory also provides statistics on how many articles and book reviews the periodicals publish each year, as well as how many are submitted."

Ulrichsweb.com

Ulrichsweb.com is the online version of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory. It is a bibliographic database providing detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative information for more than 250,000 serials from 80,000 publishers and corporate authors in over 200 countries around the world. It covers all subjects, and includes publications that are published regularly or irregularly and are circulated free of charge or by paid subscription.Ulrichsweb.com links users to related serials for alternate titles and alternate media formats, and contains tens of thousands of URLs and e-mail addresses for links to journals and publishers.
