About Us

Special Collections at Concordia University Libraries houses and provides access to an array of rare books, archival materials, maps, photographs, and other materials that require special handling and preservation because of their rarity, fragility, unusual format, or uniqueness.

Special Collections supports the research of the Concordia University community and researchers from outside the University. The majority of our Special Collections are housed at the Vanier Library, on Concordia's Loyola Campus. Some specialized collections are integrated with regular circulating collections.

Services

Access to Collections

Items in Special Collections are available by consultation at Vanier Library on the Loyola Campus. Books and archival materials held in Special Collections do not circulate. They may be consulted in person in room VL-121 at the Vanier Library.

Consultation of Materials in Special Collections
Viewing
  • Special Collections material does not circulate. Material is available for onsite consultation in the Special Collections room (VL-121) under the supervision of library staff.
  • No food or drink is permitted in the Special Collections room.
  • Pencils or laptops may be used when viewing material. No pens of any kind may be used in the Reading Room.
  • Archival material must remain in the same order they have been organized. Do not reorganize or reclassify the documents.
  • Photographs and other fragile material will require the use of lint free gloves, which will be provided.
  • Do not dirty or annotate documents.
  • No documents are to be removed from the consultation rooms.
Duplication
  • Photocopy of material may be permitted under certain circumstances. Photocopying must be done by library staff.
  • Fragile material will not be available for photocopying.
  • Photocopying charges will apply.
  • Users are required to receive permission from the Copyright holder to reproduce any material that will be used for any purpose other than scholarly use.
  • Duplication using a digital camera without flash may be permitted in certain instances.
