Connect in the library (wifi) and print from your personal laptop

General information

Wireless network access points are available within the libraries, but we are not responsible for maintaining or fixing the network, and we cannot guarantee that the network will be functioning.

Concordia's wireless network is maintained by Instructional and Information Technology Services (IITS). Concerns, comments and questions should be directed to the IITS Helpline.

Connecting to the wifi from a tablet

Follow the instructions provided by IITS.

Connecting to the wifi from a laptop or mobile phone

For your personal laptop or mobile phone:

A wireless network called "ConcordiaWirelessInfo" can be detected by personal laptops on campus. Once logged onto this network, you can access instructions on how to configure your personal laptop for full access to the Internet via the Concordia University wireless network.

Students, faculty and staff visiting from other institutions may be able to use Concordia's wireless network using the eduroam service.

Connecting to the wifi from a laptop borrowed at the library

  • Turn on the laptop
  • Click on the "Wireless Network Connection" box (see below)
  • Enter your MyConcordia netname and password and leave the "domain" box blank

Printing - General information

You can print from your personal laptop to the the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor. When you configure your laptop to print to the library printer, it will print single-sided by default. You may be able to configure your laptop to print double sided, depending on the printer driver that has been installed. You cannot print to the Library's colour printer from your own laptop.

Printing costs 6 cents a page.

First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

Then, you must set up your laptop to print to the library's printers. Follow the instructions for:

It is not currently possible to print from mobile devices such as smartphones or tablet computers.

If your laptop does not use Windows XP or Vista, you will need to check your computer's help documentation to determine how to set up a new printer.

Your print job is identified in the print queue by your Windows login name and your computer's IP address (you only need to know one of these elements to identify your job). To find out what your IP address is, go to http://www.whatismyip.org

Print jobs are deleted from the print queue after 60 minutes at both Webster and Vanier Libraries.

Printing - Instructions for Windows XP

First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

  1. From the Start menu, select "Settings", then "Control Panel"
  2. Select "Add/Remove programs"
  3. On the left-hand menu, select "Add/Remove windows components"
  4. In the list of options that appears, check the box next to "Other Network file and print services", then click "Next"
  5. At this point you may be prompted to enter your Windows XP installation CD
  6. Return to the Control Panel, and double click on "Printers and Faxes" or "Printers and Other Hardware"
  7. Click "Add a printer" and click "Next"
  8. Select "Local printer attached to this computer"; Deselect "Automatically detect and install my plug and play printer"; Click "Next"
  9. Select "Create a new port"
  10. Select "LPR port"; Click "Next"
  11. In the "name or address of server providing lpd" enter "print.concordia.ca"
  12. In "name of printer or print queue" on that server enter "libraryBW"
  13. On the left hand side, select "HP" as printer manufacturer. On the right side, scroll down until you see "LaserJet 4100PCL" - select it by checking the box; Click "Next"
  14. The system will ask you for a printer name - call it "libraryBW"
  15. Click on "Do not share this printer"
  16. Make it the default printer (if you wish); Click "Next"

Print jobs will be sent to the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor.

Printing - Instructions for Windows Vista

First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Logo to open the "Control Panel"
  2. Select "Programs"
  3. Turn Windows Features on or off
  4. Click the "+" beside "Print Services"
  5. Place a check beside "LPR Port Monitor"
  6. Click "OK" - LPR Printing Will be installed
  7. Return to Control Panel and double click "Printers"
  8. Select "Add a printer"
  9. Select "Add a local printer"
  10. Using the radio button select "Create a new port"
  11. Using the drop down list select "LPR Port" and click "Next"
  12. In the "Name or address of server providing lpd:" enter "print.concordia.ca"
  13. In the "Name of printer or print queue on that server:" enter "libraryBW"
  14. Click "OK"
  15. On the left hand side, select "HP" as the printer manufacturer. On the right side, scroll down until you see "LaserJet 5 Si" - select it by clicking "Next"
  16. The system will ask you for a printer name - call it "libraryBW"

Print jobs will be sent to the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor.

Printing - Instructions for Windows 7

First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

  1. Click on the Windows Start Logo to open the "Control Panel".
  2. Select "View by large icons" or "View by small icons".
  3. Scroll down the list of icons and select "Programs and Features".
  4. In the left-hand pane, click "Turn Windows Features on or off".
  5. Click the "+" beside "Print and Documents Services".
  6. Place a check beside "LPR Port Monitor".
  7. Click "OK". "LPR Printing" will be installed.
  8. From The Start Menu, click "Devices and Printers".
  9. Select "Add a Printer".
  10. Select "Add a Local Printer".
  11. Using the radio button select "Create a new port".
  12. Using the drop-down list, select "LPR Port" and click "Next".
  13. In the "Name or address of server providing lpd:" enter "print.concordia.ca".
  14. In the "Name of printer or print queue on that server:" enter "libraryBW".
  15. Click "OK".
  16. On the left hand side, select "HP" as the printer manufacturer.
  17. On the right side, scroll down until you see "HP Laserjet 4250 PCL6". Select it and then click "Next".
  18. Rename the printer "libraryBW".
  19. Select "Do not share this printer".
  20. If desired, make this your "default" printer.
  21. Click "Finish".

Print jobs will be sent to the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor.

Printing - Instructions for Mac OS X

For OS 10.7 (Lion), 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.5 (Leopard):
First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

  1. Open a document to print, or start your browser and go to a web page
  2. Click on Print (to bring up the normal print window)
  3. Click on the "Printer" drop-down box
  4. Click on "Add Printer"
  5. Click on IP, fill in details as follows, leave everything else as is:
    • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    • Address: print.concordia.ca
    • Queue: libraryBW
    • Print Using: "Select printer software..." or "Select a driver to use"
      and choose: "HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5"
  6. Click on "Add"
  7. If you are prompted to select "Installation Options", you can just click on Continue
  8. If a "Setting up print.concordia.ca..." appears, just click on OK
  9. Print the document (note that only single-sided printing is supported at this time)
Printers can also be added from "Print & Scan" in the Settings panel of OS X.

Print jobs will be sent to the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor.



For OS 10.4 (Tiger) and lower: First, you need to log in to the Concordia Wireless network using your MyConcordia Netname and password.

  1. Open a document to print, or start your browser and go to a web page
  2. Click on print (to bring up the normal print window)
  3. Click on "Printer"
  4. Click on "Add Printer"
  5. Click on "IP Printer"
  6. In "address" box, enter: print.concordia.ca
  7. In "Queue" box, enter: libraryBW
  8. Click on "Select Printer"
  9. Choose HP, then "Laserjet 4100 Series v3010.107"
  10. Click on "Add"
  11. Click on "Continue"
  12. Click on "Print". The print job will be sent to the Library’s printer print queue.

Print jobs will be sent to the black and white printers on Webster Library 3rd floor or Vanier Library 2nd floor.

Help

You are expected to be self-directed when using your laptop; this includes configuring your laptop to use library printers.
