Classroom viewing

Under Canadian Copyright Law, only films for which we have purchased public performance rights can be shown in a class or group setting.

Many films in the collection are marked as having been purchased with public performance rights, these may be shown in a classroom setting.

To verify if a film has been purchased with public performance rights, check the “Terms of Use” in the CLUES record. "Public Performance Rights Obtained - Classroom Viewing Permitted" means that it can be shown in class. Films marked "Personal Use Only" may be shown in the classroom if the film is covered by either the Criterion or Audio Cine Inc., license agreements signed by Concordia University.

The Criterion license agreement includes all films from the studios listed on Criterion's website with the exception of films from Mongrel Media. To determine if a film is covered under the Criterion agreement, use the list of film titles which may be searched to determine the producer/studio of a film.

The Audio Cine Films Inc., license agreement includes all films listed on the Audio Cine Inc., website. Films may be searched by title, director and genre.

For more information see Criterion and Audio Cine Inc., Licenses Agreements.

Staff will try to locate the video within Quebec and Ontario libraries. If you are aware of the title's location at a library outside of Quebec or Ontario, please let us know and we will do our best to make arrangements to obtain it. The video collections of Ontario academic institutions can be searched through a media catalog search.

Please note that, when booking from external institutions, the Libraries cannot guarantee availability of videos on the date requested. We recommend booking well in advance of the show date. Bookings are made according to the external institution's policies. Courier services may be required and must be paid for by the department responsible for the booking. Note that it is your responsibility to ensure that public performance rights are obtained for materials shown to groups, including classes.
