Electronic Reserves

Electronic Reserves Service allows students to access full text electronic versions of some course material using CLUES, the library catalogue.

Why electronic reserves?

  • To make course materials available to students anywhere (home, lab, office), anytime (24/7)
  • To allow simultaneous access to the same material by many students

What can be made available online?

  • Journal articles
  • Documents for which the professor owns the copyright (course outline, course notes, assignments, PowerPoint presentations, etc.)
  • Documents on the WWW

How can I place material on electronic reserve?

Professors initiate the process of placing materials on reserve for their courses. They fill out a Reserve Request Form.

For each print journal article requested, the Libraries will check its electronic collection and add a link to the course reserve whenever possible.

Materials for which the professor owns the copyright (lecture notes, assignments, exams, etc.) may be made available electronically with the professor's consent. Faculty can send us either a print or electronic copy (or both) of the item they want on reserve. If a faculty member provides us with a print copy, we will scan it and make it available to students online. Students need their Library PIN to access electronic reserve material.

Links to documents on the Internet, such as a course Web site, may also be added to a course reserve list if the professor sends us the URL.

The Reserve Request Form and more information on reserve services can be found in our Reserve Material Service: a Guide for Faculty.

How can students access electronic reserves?

Students access electronic reserve material through CLUES. They can search reserve materials by course number or by professor's name. Once in the course listing, material with the message *ELECTRONIC COPY AVAILABLE* can be accessed online.

Students then simply click on the title of the item. They will be prompted for their name, barcode number and library PIN. Once this information is entered, the reserve item will appear on the screen!

If you would like to see how this works, check out our sample course, Electronic Reserves 101. Try it out and let us know what you think.
