If you've never tried Virtual Reality (VR), come by the Sandbox and we'll get you started in a fun and safe environment.
We have VR stations available for gaming on site. We encourage people to come in and play one of the video games we have in our collection. Please bring a friend since you'll need a spotter if you're playing games in VR.
For all onsite VR headsets, we have immersive games such as Tilt Brush, Beat Saber, Half-Life Alex, and many more.
For use on-site, we have HoloLenses and Tilt 5 for augmented reality (AR)—ask one of our staff members to get these set up. There are also several VR headsets you can borrow. See the VR headsets in the Sofia Discovery tool.
If you are looking to create a VR experience such as a game, an artwork, or an educational experience, talk to our staff about different software options such as Unity, Unreal Engine, and A-Frame.
During each academic term we also have a VR bootcamp workshop to understand the basics of creating a VR environment.
VR is closely related to 3D modeling, which can be used to create assets to support VR experiences. Real-life objects can be scanned with the 3D scanner and imported as digital assets into VR. Our scanning options include iPad Pros (Lidar + Scanniverse) and the Eva Artec Sanner. Ask a staff member about scanning options.
