Who are our users?

How are they using the library?

What are their needs, habits, and understandings of how the library works?

What’s important to them?

Each of our users is unique, but we can create composites – or personas – to represent model user types. Personas help us adopt different points of view, helping us consider how our decisions will affect different people.

Here are 3 undergraduate and graduate student personas based on interviews and observations done in the library in 2013 by gsmprjct.



Program: History, graduate student


  • Frictionless access to content
  • Comfortable silent study space for individual work
  • Access to library services from anywhere (mostly home)
  • Access to subject matter experts

Program: Finance, 2nd year, undergraduate


  • Group study space for collaborative work with classmates
  • Laptop-friendly environments
  • Access to digital tools and equipment for his classwork
  • Casual exchange with classmates over assignments
  • Light social interaction while co-working



Program: Computation Arts, 1st year, undergraduate


  • To grasp what resources are available to her
  • To know what the university environment has to offer, academically and socially
  • To know what is expected of her, academically and socially—especially if this is coming from someone more like a peer than an instructor
  • A place where she can concentrate, feel motivated, and occasionally reach out for help
