Deep Rooted Love

Date: 2020

Image still and film by Ava Marucci Campbell and the script is the poem by poet Lana Kashkosh.

Everyday it’s something different, deep rooted
Intertwined between my fingers

The nappy

Coconut oil shine
and silky like moonlight,

I sleep tight
Protecting my head of curls,
baby hairs too

She knows it can
be frustrating sometimes
She’s knows
be patient

Brushing it out,
deep roots filled with love
Brushing it out,
let it flow out
But not blow out

unattractive they said
Too kinky they said
But I love that cocoa butter scent
They didn’t know

Soft as can be
fragile
It’s me
Style it lush

My arm gets sore
it’s worth it

Passed down to me
from my mama
and her mama
and our mothers

Coils, puffs, twists, knots
I convinced myself
How to love my
head of hair

Complicated
they told us we shouldn’t
But
We birthed this practice
From the dirt under our nails
To our baby pink combs

she pulled and braided her hair tightly
don’t let it sit too

my curls are the definition of self love
one rooted in blackness

nourish it, nurture it, and make it slick

She lays her edges down, with a foundation

Knowing her mothers
did the same

we carry on our heads
Deep rooted love

Take a Moment for Representation: An Anti-Racism Series

We are proud to present Concordia University Library's inaugural digital exhibition. Take a Moment presents a series of un-interrupted moments for solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, for reflection on systemic racism, and for making space for Black representation. At this exact moment in time, let us pause for a minute, or two, or more...
