Research highlights 2023-2024

This report provides an overview of research-related initiatives at Concordia Library, including funding awarded to Concordia librarians and research dissemination activities. Concordia Library is an active participant in scholarly research and is committed to supporting the research activities of its team.

Library Research Forum

Concordia’s 22nd Annual Library Research Forum was was held on April 16th and 17th, 2024. The forum was held in a hybrid format, with virtual presentations on April 16th followed by an in-person event at the Loyola campus on April 17th and was free to all who registered. Presentations cover a wide range of topics, including the ACRL information literacy framework, library workers working conditions, minority library users and librarians, public policy research, automatic indexing algorithms, application of generative AI to information services, decolonialisation of library subject headings and of archival description, acquisition of private archives, issues in the acquisition of film, issues with sexually explicit material in library collections, bibliographic record duplication in WorldCat, neutrality, and the representation of Canadian and Quebec librarians in Wikidata.

The plenary speaker was Dr. Aaron Johnson, Associate Vice President Research (Strategic Institutional Initiatives & Innovation) and Associate Professor, Department of Psychology at Concordia University, who spoke on Open Scholarship in Research: why it is important, and small steps to get you started.

The Library Research Forum Committee for 2023-2024 was composed of Larry Deck (chair), Krista Alexander, Kate Ripley, Pat Riva, and Ellen Wright.

Researcher-in-Residence

Concordia Library welcomed its 7th researcher-in-residence, Naomi Frost, in the fall of 2023. Ms. Naomi Frost is a PhD student in the Department of History at Concordia University. Her doctoral research focuses on the oral histories of 1.5 and second-generation migrants and intergenerational storytelling in the Cambodian post-genocide diaspora in Canada, Australia, and the United States. She also works as a research assistant for the Concordia University project “Cemetery as Metaphor”.

As part of her residency, Ms. Frost conducted research using the Library’s collections and archives, drawing extensively from the Azrieli Holocaust Collection, Jonassohn Genocide Collection, and Paul Monty collection. Her residency will conclude with an exhibition in the Webster Library, co-developed with local community organizations. The exhibition will showcase some of the memory work being produced by Cambodian Montrealers.

The Library’s researcher-in-residence program has as one of its goals to foster a culture of research. The program was created as part of the Library’s Strategic Plan 2016-2021, in order to promote research in the Library and the use of research by librarians. The program offers the opportunity for scholars or doctoral students to focus on an area of inquiry in a supportive and enriching environment and to interact with Concordia Library staff and resources.

2021-2022

Library Research Forum

Concordia Library’s 20th Annual Research Forum was held on online on April 26 and 27, 2022. The virtual forum was open to all who registered and included presentations and posters about browsing and searching interfaces for metadata about online literary performance, image indexing and retrieval, digital preservation, archival studies, and EDI. A plenary session was held, moderated by the Library’s researcher-in-residence, Désirée Rochat in conversation with James Hudson of University of Guelph, on the topic “Racial capitalism and knowledge production in library and information science.”

The Research Forum Committee for 2022-2023 was composed of Chloe Lei (chair), Guylaine Beaudry, Susie Breier, and Megan Fitzgibbons.

Researcher-in-Residence

Concordia Library welcomed it’s 5th researcher-in-residence, Dr. Désirée Rochat, in the fall of 2021. Dr. Rochat is a community educator and transdisciplinary scholar. Guided by an integrative approach connecting historical research, community archival preservation and education, her work aims to document, theorize and transmit (hi)stories of Black communities’ activism. She develops innovative and collaborative projects bridging scholarly and community work and is involved in various initiatives for the preservation and promotion of Black community archives.

As researcher-in-residence at Concordia Library, Dr. Rochat explored strategies to improve community outreach, relations and engagement to foster the holistic development and use of Black community-related special collections. Her objectives were to examine what has been done by the Library’s Special Collections to actively encourage the acquisition and use of Black community collections as well as examine what has been done by the Library to foster community outreach, relations and engagement with Black communities inside and outside the university.

Library Research Forum

The Concordia Library's 17th Annual Research Forum was held on April 26, 2019 at the Loyola Jesuit Hall and Conference Centre. The day included presentations and posters about academic librarians' and archivists' conceptions of research, emerging roles for academic librarians, research paradigms in library and information studies, and more. The keynote speaker was Camille Callison, Learning and Organizational Development Librarian and PhD student, University of Manitoba, on "Changing Landscapes in Libraries, Archives, and Cultural Memory Institutions by Honoring Indigenous Voices and Providing a Space for Reconciliation".

The Librarians' Research Forum Committee for 2018-19 consisted of Michelle Lake (chair), Guylaine Beaudry, Joshua Chalifour, and John Latour.

2022-2023

Library Research Forum

Concordia’s 21st annual Library Research Forum was, for the first time, held as a two-day hybrid event, with presentations taking place virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, and presentations taking place in person at Concordia University’s Loyola Campus on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Both days were open to all registered to attend, and recordings were made available to participants following the event for those who were unable to take part live. Presentation topics included EDI, software selection, research impact factors, open access, and Canadian census data. This year’s plenary speaker was leading national and international expert on copyright and information policy, Victoria Owen, Information Policy Scholar-Practitioner at the University of Toronto who spoke about libraries and accessibility in an international context in her session entitled “Champions of Accessibility: A Call to Action for LIS Practitioners.” The Research Forum Committee for 2023-2024 was composed of Christine Smith (chair), Pat Riva, Larry Deck, and Aeron MacHattie with support from Kate Ripley, Miranda Monosky and Luminita Florentina Draia.

Researcher-in-Residence

Concordia Library welcomed its 6th researcher in residence, Stephanie Hornstein, in the fall of 2023. Stéphanie Hornstein is a course instructor and PhD candidate in the department of Art History at Concordia. Her doctoral research is concerned with tracing patterns in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century travel photographs of the broad region which was designated by Westerners as the “Orient.” Her particular focus is on themes that are common across photographic representations of Japan and Egypt. Her writing has appeared in Ciel variable, History of Photography, and RACAR, among other publications.

As researcher-in-residence at Concordia Library Ms. Hornstein undertook her research project “Journey Through the Stacks: The Shelf-Life of Photographically Illustrated Travelogues, 1880-1930.” As part of the residency, she focused on the Library’s illustrated travelogues from the circulating collection.
